Ukrainian language is a state language in Ukraine. However, the Russian language is common in Ukraine too. According to the information of 2001 population census 67.5% of Ukrainians consider Ukrainian language as their native language, and 29.6% – the Russian language.
The population of Ukraine is about 48 million people. The population is multinational. General public includes 77.8% of Ukrainians and 17.3% of Russians.

The citizens of CIS enter Ukraine territory without visas. They should just have an international or national passport. The citizens of the European Union, USA, Canada, Japan and Switzerland do not need visa to stay in Ukraine for 90 days (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The citizens of the other countries are advised to contact the consular divisions and embassies of Ukraine abroad to obtain a visa.

It is forbidden to bring the transport vehicles older than 5 years, toxic agents, radioactive materials, explosive substances; and materials which contain propaganda of war, racism, violence; food products, which are not accompanied by the certificate of conformance, precious metals and stones, cultural values, cancelled securities.
It is allowed to bring up to $10,000 cash into Ukraine, or equivalent in the national currency.

To bring animals into Ukraine you must have a veterinary passport for the animal and F-1 form of the veterinary certificate (issued not later than 72 hours prior to border crossing).
National currency of Ukraine is Ukrainian hrivna (UAH), which consists of 100 kopecks. Banknotes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 hrivnas are available. Currency code: 980. Official settlements in the foreign currency are forbidden.
Official settlements in Ukraine are carried out exclusively in hrivnas. You can exchange the most common foreign currency in the Ukrainian banks. You can exchange US dollars, euro and rubles in the banks (working hours: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday - Friday, some branches are open in Saturday too), or in special exchange offices (many of them work 24 h); there are a lot of them in the big cities. We would not recommend to exchange the currency at the railway stations or airports, as usually the rate there is unfavorable low. It is even dangerous to sell the currency to the unknown persons, as trustful foreigners happened to be victims of cheats.
Though the water from the tap is filtered and chlorinated we would not recommend using the water running from the tap to satisfy the thirst. You would better boil or filter tap water. You are recommended to buy water for direct consumption in the store.
Most food stores or groceries in the big cities of Ukraine are open since 8 a.m. till 9 p.m. The big supermarkets are open since 8 a.m. till 11 p.m. People in Ukraine often do shopping at night at 24/7 supermarkets.
At the weekends the malls and boutiques work since 10 a.m. till 10 p.m. Their gain at those days is the highest.

Main operators of mobile communication in Ukraine: МТС, Kievstar, Life. It is most profitable to buy prepaid cards of the mobile communication. You can buy them at any crossroads without providing a passport or any other document. The prices depend on the operator rates. However the common tendency is a cheap mobile communication, maximum cost of one minute within Ukraine is $0.12.
We recommend using any official dispatcher service to call the taxi. To catch a taxi in the street is more expensive. Moreover, when you start to discuss the price with the taxi driver in correct or incorrect English.
Intercity taxi service (567) is available in Ukraine. Whatever city you are in, call this number from the cell phone and inform the operator your city and address. The average tariff for 1 km is $0.3. The minimum cost of the car delivery depends on the service.

Parking is a sore point in the big cities of Ukraine. Every city has free and paid parking. Paid parking has the corresponding road signs. The cost of 1 hour of the paid parking in Kiev is $1.2. You should pay using the special automatic machine (if available), or to the parking worker who has a special orange clothes.

As a rule the tips are not included in the bill. In some facilities (very rare) they include 5% of the service cost in the bill. The tips are up to the client, as a rule they are 5-10% of the bill amount.
